Valve has restored the ability to gift Dota 2 sets from the Trove of Terror treasure after an anti-abuse restriction was mistakenly applied to every item from that collection. The change puts the treasure’s sets back into the hands of players who want to send them to friends, while keeping a defined gifting window around each set. It matters because the earlier restriction did not merely limit some transfers: it prevented Trove of Terror items from being gifted at all.

The update addresses a problem in the gifting system rather than changing the contents of the treasure itself. Valve said the restriction had been intended to protect against abuse involving gift exchanges, but it was applied too broadly to Trove of Terror. The company noted that the overwhelming majority of gifts are sent immediately after a treasure is opened. Its response is to allow gifting again for all sets in the collection while it continues working on anti-abuse code. In practical terms, the revision separates the ability to give a set to a friend from the longer-term work on protections intended to make improper resale more difficult.

How the Trove of Terror gift window works

Each Trove of Terror set can be gifted to a friend once during a 30-day period. The window is tied to the set’s status when the change arrived. For sets that were already sitting in player inventories, the 30 days are counted from this update. For treasures that have not yet been opened, the countdown begins when the treasure is opened. That distinction gives existing inventory items and unopened treasures different starting points, even though both are subject to the same 30-day limit. Players can check the final date for sending an eligible set in their inventory.

There is also a friend-list condition attached to the feature. A recipient must have been on the sender’s friends list for the required period, so adding someone after obtaining an item does not create an immediate route to gift that set. The restriction is intended to make cosmetic-item resale harder, while the restored gift function preserves the ordinary use of sending a treasure reward to a friend. Valve’s update therefore does not present gifting as unrestricted trading: it restores a specific friend-to-friend option with a one-time limit for every set and timing rules that depend on when the item became available.

Replacement treasures for reforged sets

Valve also announced a remedy for players who may have wanted to gift sets but reforged them instead while gifting was unavailable. Players will receive one new Trove of Terror treasure for every six reforges, with the number rounded up. This is a separate part of the update from the restored gifting rule: it concerns sets that were already reforged, whereas the gift window governs sets that can still be sent. The Trove of Terror treasure was added to Dota 2 on the night of October 7. Its reported cosmetic lineup includes Immortal-quality items, altered spell icons and effects, new models for Tormentor and Roshan, the new Maw of the Megalodon Arcana for Tidehunter, and a Sepulchral Stalker set connected to the rereleased Dread Retribution Arcana for Drow Ranger.

  • Before choosing a recipient, check the item’s displayed gift deadline in your inventory; an existing set and an unopened treasure start their clocks at different times.
  • Check that the recipient meets the friends-list condition before trying to send the set. Gifting is a one-time action for that set, not an unrestricted transfer option.

Valve has not given a date for completing its broader anti-abuse work. For now, the practical change is a restored, limited way to send a Trove of Terror reward to an existing friend. The separate replacement-treasure measure addresses players who reforged sets while the gifting restriction was in place.
