A Necronomicon recipe has appeared in Dota 2’s files after the release of the Trove of Terror treasure, reviving attention around an item that is not currently in the game. The finding was reported by analyst sikle, who also highlighted hidden file changes involving hero hotkeys, Plague Ward data, ability text and experimental unit-movement controls. None of the discoveries confirms that Necronomicon will return to live play, but the recipe is a concrete change inside the game files.
The listed recipe combines Belt of Strength, Staff of Wizardry and a recipe for a total cost of 2700. That combination existed before patch 7.07 in 2017. A separate report on the file changes described a different revision from the item’s last version: two Sage’s Mask and Belt of Strength had been replaced by Staff of Wizardry and Belt of Strength. Under that reported revision, the item would provide intelligence rather than mana regeneration and would still have three upgrade levels. Valve’s reason for changing an absent item has not been stated, leaving its intended use uncertain. The discovery matters because it is more specific than a stray name or unfinished reference. It includes a build path and reported stat-direction change, while still stopping short of proof that players will be able to purchase Necronomicon. sikle noted that an earlier change involving Specialist’s Array was followed by its arrival in the game, but presented the Necronomicon finding as something that may mean nothing. That distinction is important: a file entry can point to testing, preparation or unused work rather than a confirmed release plan.

Hidden changes extend beyond the item
The same examination found that separate hotkey settings are now working for heroes with numerous additional abilities: Invoker, Kez and Largo. This is a functional interface change rather than a balance announcement, and it sits apart from the Necronomicon material. The files also show a reorganisation of how Plague Ward data is stored. Instead of five separate units, the game now reads the information from the ability itself through one unit. That restructuring has an apparent side effect. The ability data does not contain experience information, meaning Plague Ward kills do not grant experience under the reported behaviour. sikle described it as a bug. The detail gives the file changes an immediate gameplay-facing angle, but it does not establish whether the experience issue is permanent, intentional or already being addressed. No official explanation of the Plague Ward behaviour was included.
Additional strings were added for possible ability extensions, though they were all disabled with status 0. Their wording refers to potential effects such as allied movement through Fissure, item-effect interaction for Flak Cannon, reduced-damage travel through heroes for Sharpshooter, and an Overwhelming Odds barrier that also counts creeps. Disabled strings are not confirmation that any of those effects will be activated. They may reflect completed tests, future additions or work that never reaches the playable game. The file changes also include developer-only controls. One new console variable is tied to teleporting in fog of war, while four more belong to an experimental system for controlling unit movement. Older pathfinding variables were removed as new controls were added and nav_* variables were closed. That pattern points to work on how units move, but does not confirm a visible change to lane creeps or any other unit behaviour. The report itself raised that question rather than providing an answer.
What the newly listed entries describe
The newly surfaced material mixes practical settings, inactive ability text and internal testing controls. That makes it useful to separate confirmed file content from possible gameplay outcomes. The entries below organize details that were reported as present, not announced features for a future Dota 2 update. Other new variables add to the uncertainty. gameinfo_cannot_override and several related controls were described as protection-focused. dota_madness_color follows the June appearance of dota_health_bar_madness, which still has no stated use. MIN_ATTACK_RANGE is a new flag preventing attacks against targets closer than a defined distance, but it is not currently used anywhere. It may relate to model-breaking bugs, although that remains only a possibility.
- dota_unit_use_new_tp_fow_logic is a developer-only test function associated with teleporting in fog of war.
- dota_use_experimental_npc_controller_* covers four developer-only console variables for an experimental unit-movement system.
- MIN_ATTACK_RANGE is an unused flag that blocks attacks on targets closer than a specified distance.
- dota_madness_color has no confirmed function, despite the earlier addition of dota_health_bar_madness.

| Ability | Disabled string described in the files |
|---|---|
| Fissure | Allies can pass through freely. |
| Flak Cannon | Projectiles work with item effects. |
| Sharpshooter | Travels through all heroes with reduced damage. |
| Overwhelming Odds | Its barrier is also granted for creeps. |
The newly found recipe is a real file change, but Necronomicon remains unavailable in live Dota 2. The disabled ability strings and developer-only movement controls carry the same uncertainty: they show internal work, not a release plan. A future client update or official announcement would be needed to establish whether any of these experiments will reach players.
